Redefining African Librarianship with Bibliotherapy and Cinema-Therapy

Dr. Sola Owolabi: Transforming African Librarianship through Bibliotherapy and Cinema Therapy

In the September 2024 edition of the Librarian Spotlight Africa Programme, Dr. Sola Owolabi was recognized for his pioneering work in bibliotherapy and cinema therapy. A senior lecturer and public speaker, Dr. Owolabi uses storytelling through literature and media to address societal challenges such as juvenile delinquency, violence, and peer pressure—particularly among adolescents.

In an interview anchored by Sylvester Ebhonu, Dr. Sola Owolabi stressed that librarianship extends far beyond managing books. “Librarianship is not just about books,” he explained. “Librarians are philosophers and creators of knowledge. We must use our platforms to tackle real-world issues and foster healing.” His video, *Soliloquizing on Violence in Nigeria*, reflects his mission to use cinema therapy to promote unity and healing in divided communities.

Dr. Owolabi also shared his career transition from the corporate world—having worked with UBA and KPMG—to academia, where he now serves as a senior lecturer at Bells University of Technology. His work in bibliotherapy, including his book *The Library Boy*, demonstrates his belief in the transformative power of libraries to empower underserved communities.

During the event, Dr. Owolabi’s close friend and fellow academic, Dr. Ayodele John Alonge, commended Dr Owolabi’s  extensive knowledge and insight, describing him as “a living encyclopedia of ideas, libraries, and information.” Building a connection with Dr. Owolabi, he noted, is a wise decision for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding and knowledge…

Key Insights from Dr. Sola Owolabi’s Transformative Approach to Librarianship: Highlights from the Interview

A key takeaway from the interview was his advice to librarians interested in creative therapies: “Start small. Focus on the message and the needs of your audience, and you will grow.”

    • Librarianship is More Than Books – Librarians play a vital role in addressing societal issues through storytelling, literature, and media.
    • Use Bibliotherapy and Cinema Therapy – Creative therapies like bibliotherapy and cinema therapy can tackle challenges like juvenile delinquency and social violence.
    • Start Small, Focus on Impact– Begin with simple resources, focusing on the message and audience needs. Your impact will grow over time.
    • Leverage the Power of Narrative – Use storytelling to inspire, connect with people, and address personal and societal challenges.
    • Embrace Technology – Integrate new technologies, such as AI, to ensure libraries remain relevant in the digital age.
    • Empower Communities Through Libraries – Libraries are key to education and empowerment, especially for underserved communities.
    • Prioritize Collaboration and Mentorship – Share knowledge, collaborate, and mentor others to advance the profession.
    • Commit to Lifelong Learning – Continuously learn and adapt to stay at the forefront of technological and therapeutic innovations in the field.

The Librarian Spotlight Africa Programme, hosted by Sylvester Ebhonu (The Digital Librarian), with Mrs. Folashade Adepoju serving as the Evaluation Committee lead, recognized Dr. Sola Owolabi as the *Librarian of the Month* for September 2024. The certificate, signed by Mrs. Adepoju, honors his innovative work, which continues to inspire librarians and educators across Africa, showcasing how creativity can shape the future of libraries. • Nigeria’s Forestry and Education at a Crossroads: UI Professor Calls for Urgent Reforms

Nigeria’s Forestry and Education at a Crossroads: UI Professor Calls for Urgent Reforms

Nigeria’s Forestry at Risk, Warns UI Professor

Nigeria’s forests are facing severe threats, warns Professor Ayodeji Oludare Omole, a Forestry Engineering expert at the University of Ibadan. In his inaugural lecture titled   Working in the Shadows of Death, Professor Omole outlined key challenges in the country’s forestry sector, including rapid population growth, agricultural expansion, illegal logging, and widespread insecurity.

Speaking at the 561st Inaugural Lecture of the University of Ibadan, he expressed deep concern over the impact of insurgency and violence, particularly in northern Nigeria, which endangers the lives of both farmers and forestry professionals. These security issues have made forest management and reforestation efforts increasingly difficult, further depleting Nigeria’s already threatened forests.

Professor Omole emphasized that the effects of these attacks stretch beyond the northern regions, with nationwide consequences for economic growth and foreign exchange. He urged the government to focus on promoting reforestation and afforestation, both crucial to restoring ecosystems, mitigating climate change, and improving food security. He stressed the need for financial backing from the government and private institutions to support these initiatives, which would enhance national prosperity and create jobs.

The professor also called for a dedicated financial allocation to forestry to ensure sustainable management and protect ecosystems and communities reliant on forest resources. Despite the risks, he praised forest engineers for their essential role in managing timber, pulpwood, and other forest products critical for national development. He called for stronger safety measures for these professionals.

In addition to forestry, Professor Omole, a former ASUU chairman, addressed the crises facing Nigeria’s university system. He described how policies like the Nigerian University System Innovation Portal (NUSIP), the Treasury Single Account (TSA), and the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) are stifling the autonomy and growth of higher education institutions. These policies, he argued, threaten intellectual freedom and the sustainability of Nigerian universities, likening the situation to “working in the shadows of death.”

Without urgent reforms, the professor warned, the university system could rapidly deteriorate, with damaging consequences for both education and the country’s intellectual future.

     Implications for Stakeholders

Professor Omole urged swift action to enhance security, reform policies, and boost financial investment in both the forestry and education sectors, ensuring their sustained contribution to Nigeria’s development. In his lecture, Professor Omole highlighted critical challenges facing various stakeholders in these sectors across Nigeria.

    Government and Policymakers
    • Security and Forestry Support:  The government must address insecurity to ensure effective forest management and reforestation. Financial support is also critical for the sustainability of the forestry sector.
    • University Reforms: Urgent policy reforms are necessary to protect academic freedom and the autonomy of Nigeria’s universities.

    Forest Engineers and Professionals

    • Workplace Safety: Forestry professionals face dangerous working conditions due to violence. Improved safety measures and government backing are essential to sustainable forestry.
    • Sustainable Operations: Forestry professionals require financial support to manage forests and ensure a steady supply of timber and other products for national development.
    Financial Institutions
    • Green Investment: Reforestation and afforestation projects present an opportunity for financial institutions to contribute to climate resilience and economic growth through green financing.
    Farmers and Local Communities
    • Protection and Involvement:** Farmers facing violence need government protection. Their active involvement in reforestation efforts is crucial for restoring forest ecosystems.
    Academics and Universities
    • Protecting Autonomy: Current policies are stifling Nigeria’s universities. Reforms are needed to safeguard academic freedom and ensure the quality of education.

OptimisticScholar proudly congratulates Professor Ayodeji Oludare Omole on the outstanding presentation of his Inaugural Lecture at the University of Ibadan. Your dedication and contributions to forestry research, higher education, and unionism were clearly demonstrated, marking a significant milestone in your esteemed academic career. This achievement reflects your tireless efforts and serves as an inspiration to us all. Congratulations.

Mastering Adaptability and Innovation in a Rapidly Changing Business Landscape

From Theory to Practice: Dr. Kingsley T. Ihejirika’s Strategic Insights on Evolving Business Analysis

A fascinating interview conducted by Deirdre Caren and shared on LinkedIn features Dr. Kingsley T. Ihejirika, who provides a comprehensive account of his progression from scholarly pursuits to influential positions in the field of business analysis. The conversation, appropriately named “Academic Theory to Business Analysis with Kingsley Ihejirika,” took place on Monday, April 15, 2024, and has served as an inspiration to both professionals and newbies in the business world.

Dr. Ihejirika began his academic career in Nigeria, earning a degree in Library Science. His academic journey continued to New Zealand, where he studied social media and involvement in library systems. His research looked on how libraries could employ social media to increase user engagement and improve reading, giving Dr. Ihejirika a core skill set that he would later use in his business analysis career.

Dr. Ihejirika’s transition into business analysis appeared to be a natural step. His interest and drive to interact directly with people and processes prompted him to pursue additional schooling in information systems. This transition was prompted by considerable changes in the university system during his tenure, including severe personnel reductions. These experiences demonstrated the value of adaptation and direct interaction in professional contexts.

Dr. Ihejirika described his first steps in business analysis at the Ministry of Justice in New Zealand, beginning as a strategic business analyst and progressing to a more project-focused job within the digital team. His current responsibilities include designing critical solutions for project success, which he finds both tough and rewarding.

Reflecting on the fundamental concepts of business analysis, Dr. Kingsley T. Ihejirika emphasised the critical role that data and information management play in today’s business environment. While the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and other technical breakthroughs is necessary, he believes they should be used to supplement rather than replace the important human capacity for critical thinking and problem-solving. Dr. Ihejirika emphasised that AI and related technologies are best employed as tools to improve human decision-making processes, ensuring that strategic insights and operational decisions are guided by both data-driven analytics and human intuition.

Dr. Ihejirika emphasised the dynamic nature of the business analysis, emphasising the need for professionals to constantly learn and adapt to rapid changes and difficulties in the business world. He emphasised the importance of adaptability not only in keeping up with technical changes, but also in understanding the larger business environment in order to properly match tech solutions with business goals. Dr. Ihejirika pushed for a proactive learning mentality that includes formal training, self-study, and hands-on experience to gain a better grasp of both emerging technology and strategic business demands. His thoughts assist professionals in managing the complexity of a data-driven business environment while emphasising creativity and strategic thinking.

Dr. Ihejirika recommends that anyone joining the profession of business analysis or considering a similar career commit to continual learning and be open to mentorship. He emphasises the necessity of having a diverse and problem-solving mindset, which he believes are essential for not only navigating, but thriving in the field of business analysis.

Dr. Ihejirika’s path from academic theory to practical commercial application exemplifies the dynamic interaction of education and professional practice, providing useful insights for professionals at all stages of their lives. For further insights and discussions, he welcomes connections and conversations on LinkedIn, where he remains an active and influential figure in the business analysis community.
