It brings me great joy to celebrate Dr. Adetoun Adebisi Oyelude on her 60th birthday and to reflect on the significance of her new book, Cataloguing Memorabilia: Stress Management, Mentoring and Excellence.

This is not just another professional book. To me, it is a deeply meaningful work that brings together scholarship, experience, memory, mentorship, and service. It speaks from the heart of librarianship and from the life of a woman who has clearly given herself to learning, teaching, writing, and lifting others.

Dr Oyelude is also one of my mentors and lecturers. She is among the senior professionals who influenced my journey and widened my international exposure in librarianship. I remember admiring her when I was still a young librarian. She stood out to me as a librarian who had developed herself to a remarkable global standard, attending numerous conferences, building professional networks, and advancing her career with unusual determination and commitment. What made this even more inspiring was that she pursued much of this growth through personal sacrifice, hard-earned savings, and vision. For many of us who looked up to her, she symbolised what was possible through diligence, courage, and professional excellence.  What makes this book especially important is that it addresses an area many library professionals know too well but do not always discuss enough: the pressures and demands of cataloguing work. As the book explains, cataloguing is often seen as a difficult and stressful part of librarianship, yet it remains central to the organisation of knowledge and the effectiveness of library service. In the author’s words, cataloguing is “the ‘engine room’ of any library”. That phrase alone captures the weight and importance of the work.

I find this book valuable because it does more than simply describe the problem. It provides perspective, encouragement, and practical guidance. From the early pages, it is evident that the book aims to demystify cataloguing, address stress management sincerely, emphasise mentoring, and foster excellence in professional practice. Additionally, the book illustrates how these issues are interconnected with service delivery, resilience, and the wider culture of librarianship.

Readers should get a copy for several reasons.

  • First, it is a useful professional resource for librarians, cataloguers, metadata specialists, information professionals, and students of library and information science. It addresses real challenges in the field and offers insight drawn from long experience.
  • Second, it is a mentoring text. One of the strengths of this book is its recognition that people do not become excellent professionals in isolation. They need guidance, encouragement, and examples to follow. This is why I find the book timely and relevant, especially for younger professionals who may find cataloguing intimidating at first.
  • Third, the book is also a record of a life of impact. It includes not only discussion of professional practice but also the author’s bibliography and tributes marking her 60th birthday. That gives the work a memorial and inspirational quality. It preserves a professional journey in a way that future readers can learn from.

I was especially moved by the description in the foreword, which presents Dr. Oyelude as “an unrelenting mentor” and a role model whose life reflects diligence, integrity, and excellence. That description feels fitting. This book is not just about cataloguing. It is about how a life of discipline, resilience, and generosity can shape a profession and bless a community.

To me, this is why the book deserves attention. It is practical, reflective, and inspiring. It will be useful to practitioners, meaningful to mentees, and encouraging to anyone pursuing excellence in their field. It reminds us that technical work also carries human stories, that professional pressure requires wisdom, and that mentorship remains one of the greatest gifts a scholar can offer.
